We Were All Once A Blank Canvas...

I’ve had this thought for a while now… That people are a bit like paintings.

When we come into the world, we start as a blank canvas.

No meanings. No stories. No fears. No rules. Just space.

Then slowly, life starts painting on us.

A comment here. An experience there. A teacher. A parent. A friendship.

A moment of embarrassment. A moment of love. A moment of pain.

Brush stroke after brush stroke.

And when we’re young, we’re incredibly impressionable. Because we don’t yet know what’s true and what isn’t. We absorb everything.

The way people react to us…The way situations make us feel… The things we hear repeatedly.

The emotions attached to moments…

All of it starts creating the picture we eventually identify as “me”. Our beliefs begin forming long before we consciously choose them.

“I’m not good enough.”

“I have to work hard to be loved.”

“People leave.”

"Love equals hurt"

“I’m too much.”

“I’m not enough.”

“I have to stay safe.”

“I can’t trust people.”

“I always get things wrong.”

Sometimes those beliefs aren’t even ours. They were handed to us by people who were carrying unfinished paintings of their own.

And over time, those colours become patterns.

Those patterns become habits. Those habits become personalities. And eventually… we forget we’re the artist.

We start believing the painting is permanent.

But it isn’t. That’s the beautiful part. Paintings can be restored. Layers can be softened. New colours can be introduced. Perspective can change.

Even the darkest messy sections can become part of something meaningful.

Yes, mistakes get made. Some brush strokes were rushed. Some were painted during chaos.

Some were painted by people who never learned how to hold the brush properly themselves.

But none of that means the canvas is ruined. We are are evolving artwork.

And maybe healing is simply becoming aware that you can pick the brush back up again.

That you can question the old lines. Challenge the colours you inherited. Repaint the stories attached to painful moments. Create space where there was once noise.

Maybe growth isn’t about becoming someone else. Maybe it’s about uncovering the picture that was always underneath the fear.

Because at any moment… We can choose new colours. New meanings. New direction.

We are not prisoners of the early sketches. We are the artist too. And no matter what life has painted so far…There is still space on the canvas to create something absolutely amazing.
