I recently took part in a round-table session about how we can make it easier for men to open up and honestly, it hit hard.Around the room, so many of us had lost friends, colleagues, or family members to suicide over the years.
Good men who felt they couldn’t talk… or didn’t know how to.
We want to change that.
Life can be a tough environment to navigate at the best of times add global pandemics, uncertainty, pressure, and constant noise, and it can feel overwhelming for anyone.
You may notice I am hugely inspired by music, so the 21 Questions was a nod to 50 cent
A track that is very emotive and that partly inspired this conversation for me especially was “Strength of One Man” by The Jacksons.
(For the house lovers: it was sampled about 20 years ago by Eminence & Kathy Brown for “Give It Up” an absolute classic.) If you get a moment, listen to the lyrics in the original:
“Strong enough when the road is tough…”
“How strong is the strength of one man, to carry his load?”
Powerful words and a reminder that even the strongest lads can be carrying far more than they ever show.
To help us better understand what men are really thinking and feeling, I’ve put together a completely anonymous questionnaire.
No names. No contact details. Just honest insight.
If you’ve got 5 minutes, I’d really appreciate your thoughts.
It might help us build safer spaces for men to talk before things reach crisis point.
The Form
If you do want to talk however, please reach out.
The lyrics if you want them...
There's a system we all must follow
If we want to get ahead
Some men are strong enough to make it
And others are just too afraid
But mama told me a story
And it keeps, keeps me alive
Said some are weak, the weak fall by the wayside
And all the strong, the strong survive
Now you tell me...
How strong is the strength of a man
Can he stay on his road, and carry his load
Can he carry his load
Can he carry his load
Can he carry his load
Can he carry his load
We have picked people, and say they're on our side
And after they did everything they want (y'all)
They start to tell us lies, just a lie after a lie
But we can't blame our problems
On just that chosen few
'Cause if we want to solve them
It's up to me and up to you
Now you tell me...
How strong is the strength of a man
Can he stay on his road, and carry his load
Can he carry his load
Can he carry his load
Can he carry his load
Can he carry his load
Is he strong enough, because the road is tough
Strong enough, because the road is tough... (repeat)
