Re-Evaluating the Past: How Shifting Perspective Can Change Everything

“Our belief system is based upon our evaluation of something and frequently when we re-evaluate a situation, our belief about that situation will change.”

I was listening to an audiobook recently and Bob Proctor recounted a story where a friend and mentor said the phrase above to him, and something clicked that changed his life.

Have you ever looked back on an old memory and thought, "If only I knew then what I know now…”?

While we can’t literally travel back in time, we can revisit old moments from a new perspective. And when we do, something incredible can happen: our beliefs about that situation and ourselves can transform.

Why Beliefs Get “Stuck”

Many of our limiting beliefs were formed years ago, often when we were very young. A single experience, being told off in class, feeling left out on the playground, hearing “you’re not good enough” or being bullied can plant beliefs like “I’m not smart” or “I don’t belong.”

At the time, our younger self didn’t have the knowledge, emotional tools, or context to see the situation differently. So the belief stuck and shaped how we saw ourselves for years.

The Power of Re-Evaluation

Bob Proctor’s insight captures something profound: when you re-evaluate a past experience, you can open the door for a new belief.

Imagine sitting beside your younger self in that old memory. What would you say now? Perhaps you’d offer reassurance:

  • “You were doing your best, you weren’t wrong for feeling scared.”

  • “That person’s reaction wasn’t a reflection of your worth.”

  • “You are safe. You belong. You are enough.”

This shift in perspective doesn’t change what happened, but it changes what it means. And meaning is where belief lives.

How Belief Coding® Uses This Principle

Belief Coding® works a lot like this “mental time travel.” In a safe, guided process, we help you locate the root cause of a limiting belief and revisit it with compassion and understanding. Using right-brain processes like imagination, visualisation, and emotional release, you get to re-evaluate the situation from your current, wiser perspective.

When you do, the old belief often dissolves and is replaced with a more empowering truth, one that supports who you are today and who you are moving forward.

What Could Change for You?

Think about a belief you’ve carried for years. Maybe it’s:

  • “I always fail.”

  • “I’m not lovable.”

  • “I have no control over my life.”

Now ask: What if my younger self got the support, kindness, or information they needed back then?  How might that belief shift?

That’s the magic of re-evaluation. You don’t erase your past, you reclaim it.

A Gentle Invitation

If you’ve ever felt held back by old stories, know this: your beliefs are not fixed. With the right support, you can reframe them and create space for healing and growth.

As Bob Proctor said, when you re-evaluate a situation, your belief can, and often will change.

And when your beliefs change, your whole life can too.
